First impression, lasting impact (Guest Blog by SLP student)

First impression. Lasting impact.

Enjoy this piece, contributed by Kayla Axelrod following her first impression reading and learning about the what, why and how of Transcending Stuttering. And what struck her most, was the “values.”

I will forever remember that day.

My name is Kayla Axelrod and I am an SLP graduate currently pursuing my Clinical Fellowship. A few days ago, I was introduced to Transcending Stuttering (TS), and I can honestly say that I will forever remember that day.

I will remember it because as a recent graduate and new professional, I had never come across such a wholesome, positive, and uplifting approach to stuttering. I also had never come across such a comprehensive, organized, and systematic approach to something as complex as stuttering. I remember thinking to myself that if SLP graduates like myself would be exposed to more learning experiences and formats like this one, we all would benefit greatly and be better, more informed professionals.

Transcending Stuttering (TS) can apply to the challenges each one of us face.

Throughout that day, I kept going back and reading and rereading the fundamentals of Transcending Speech (TS).  I felt emotionally moved and connected to the content, the concepts of Self-Knowledge, Self-Adjustment, Self-Acceptance, and Self-Advocacy deeply resonating with me on a personal level. I realized that the fundamentals of Transcending Stuttering (TS) can apply to the challenges each one of us face.

I recognized that if I can learn to apply these concepts to my own life, I will be a better wife, a better mother, and a better professional.

I will be a better wife, a better mother, and a better professional.

To that point, I wrote down one of the TS values and taped it to my fridge.

Every person can live and enjoy life - with spontaneity, freedom, dignity and ability.

And with our rights to live, we must bear the responsibility to protect and contribute to ourselves and others.

It is my hope that by internalizing this concept, as well as everything TS stands for, my life will be changed for the better and that I will successfully change the lives of others as well.
